On The Issues

Newly elected House Speaker Jay Lucas, R-Darlington, outlined his goals for House members during his acceptance speech Tuesday. Lucas emphasized:

  • Punctuality: Lucas told House members, often late starting their daily business, that punctuality should be a cardinal political virtue.
  • Enthusiasm: Lucas said he hopes to create more enthusiasm among House members by establishing more leadership roles.
  • Empowerment: House members need to be empowered, Lucas said. Too much power has been concentrated in the speaker, he said. For example, Lucas plans to post job vacancies, appointed by the speaker, to allow House members the chance to submit resumes from their constituents.
  • Transparency: Sunlight is always the best disinfectant, Lucas said.
  • Public relations: Public officials have a responsibility to speak directly to citizens and the media without relying on press releases, Lucas said.
